• A Grateful Good-Bye to 2020

    December 30, 2020
    Uncategorized

As we end the 2020 Asha’s year, we cannot help but to reminisce on the many good things that happened throughout the rather difficult year for the US. We are grateful to God for providing for our ministry and even more, our clients. God has continued to show us that the organization is needed in the Memphis community. He encourages us to press onward in Him trusting Him to make a way when sometimes there seems to be no way.

Our number of available volunteers greatly decreased from about 45 to roughly 12 volunteers and staff who have been able to remain active in some way to serve with us. I am reminded that Jesus had 12 disciples! While our friends who have served with us are taking care of themselves and their families, we are blessed to have a tight small group that has helped us to intentionally focus on our main services and needs of clients. Our network of supporters have not stopped praying for us, helping to locate and deliver donations to us and working their best to continue to support us financially. The faith of many in our community is evident and the love we feel as an organization is a lot. We want to thank you.

In January/February we will send out our usual recap of the previous year. The annual report may surprise you as you visually see in graphs and stories how God has shown Himself helping us through your commitments. Please be looking forward to receiving that report. We have two more days before we end the 2020 year. If you’d like to help us wrap up the year with an end of year donation (or even to begin the 2021 year ahead), we sure would appreciate you. Our services extend to over 350 refugee and asylee individuals from about 150 plus families newer to the Memphis area. It is our honor and blessing to be able to call our new neighbors friends and often even family. If you would like to give please do this easily from our home page on our website at http://www.ashasrefuge.org. Let’s make these last days in 2020 our best gifts of 2020 yet! Your giving impacts lives for Jesus and helps to continue our legacy to welcome the nations well. Thank you again for helping to see our vision and mission to serve the sojourner as Jesus would and thereby giving throughout the difficult 2020 year wholeheartedly. We made it through because of Gods hand and His working through wonderful people like you.

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,” -Matthew 25:35

“Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.” -Deuteronomy 10:19

“You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” -Leviticus 19:34

  • Asha’s Photo Booth & Family Photo Project

    November 29, 2020
    Uncategorized

This year we decided to pull together a photo room to use for a variety of purposes for services to our clients. One way we are using it is to take product photos of the crafts and handmade items that our clients make to help them build their online sales site. Our assistance with our community entrepreneurs has been a wonderful blessing and we are hopeful to continue to help many families forward.

I walked in a home once and saw several small photos with a large African family with one single different white person in each photo on her wall. I would ask who the person was and they would say, we don’t know. We just wanted the photo of our family and it’s all we had so we put that on the wall. I wrote a blog about this incident years ago, when I first began the Asha’s Refuge ministry. You can search archives in the blog some time in the summer likely of 2009 for this post. I believe it’s titled, “I will never be just another photo on your wall.” My heart felt terrible that so many passerby’s would stop in to see needy refugee families only to do a days service project, take a photo, and leave the family. This seems to happen a lot around the holidays. This particular family I wrote about has been one I’ve stayed connected to now for over ten years. I’ve watched all the children grow and the family work hard to go to school, learn to drive, gain good jobs, organize community gardens, buy a first home, serve their community, volunteer at church, go through sicknesses and challenges, grow closer to Jesus, start their own side businesses, have more babies and grandchildren and so much more. I am truly blessed to call this family my forever friends. Now, I may want a photo with them one day and it will be because they truly are my friends and I want to treasure my experiences in life with them. It won’t be to show off a days good deed to post on social media. I truly care about this family in my heart.

Another way we are using the photo booth/room is to capture memories for our families. We’ve always known our families have had a desire to have a photo of their entire family, their children or themselves as a couple and have had a heart to help them make this happen. So often people who serve our clients will take a photo of themselves with the family and give the family that snap shot with their own photo in the photo of their family. This is okay sometimes, but most of the time the person hasn’t stayed connected to the family and just did a one time visit or service project and our family never sees them again. Often, our clients don’t even know who they were. They just remember it was someone who came by and wanted a photo with the family then gave them this photo.

With this, we decided to offer an opportunity for our clients to bring their family in for a photo shoot. We charged $20 for the photography session and will gift each family that chose to participate with at least an 8×10 printed portrait for Christmas this year. We’ve turned this into a fundraiser so that clients that would like to give back to this project and are able to (many we have worked with for years, have resettled well, have great jobs and are more stable) can. We will send a link for families to view all of their photos and choose to order more photos that they like at a reasonable cost. Their investment in this project is something they seem happy to do!

Our first photo week, the week before Thanksgiving, was pretty busy. We know there are still some families trying to pull all their members together to come in and get their photo taken. We have done this by appointment only to keep the numbers in our building low. It’s been fun to see the various faces, smiles and poses that our talented photographer, Erick Ramos, has been able to capture. The children are so fun and photogenic. We can’t wait to share the finished photos with our families and are eager to also share some of these with our supporters. If you would like to give to help us with this project, this would be super helpful! Our backdrops were about $85 each, then the lense rental, the staff time taking the photos and doing the editing/uploading and finally, our purchasing of all the larger family gift photos. The total project may cost about $800-$1000. We may also choose to blow some photos up for our new office building so clients will feel welcome and more at home when they visit us and see their community faces. If you would like to support this Christmas Photo Project and our Business Photo Booth, please give today at ashasrefuge.org, just click to donate.

    Uncategorized

It’s that time of year already! The 2020/2021 School Year will begin soon. Things may look a lot different for students with an increased use of technology. The schools are working hard to provide laptops but other supplies are still needed. The regular school supplies and backpacks are requested!

Please contact us at serve@ashasrefuge.org or 901-500-9200 to arrange a drop off time and location. You may also donate at http://www.ashasrefuge.org to help us offset the cost of any supplies we may need to purchase for clients in need. Thank you in advance for always supporting our cause.

Today, June 20th, 2020, is World Refugee Day where we stop and take the time to remember the more than 65.7 million displaced people around the world today and yesterday. Their strength and courage is often misunderstood. Their voices matter!

  • World Refugee Day $ Give Away

    June 18, 2020
    Uncategorized

This Saturday, June 20th is World Refuge Day. Each year we try to celebrate with a luncheon or some type of gathering with our clients. This year will be different, but we still want our clients to know we are so proud of them, happy they are here and feel blessed to have so many international friendships with them. We’ve given our clients the opportunity to send their short videos to us voicing their heart and encouragement to America and the entire world for such a time as this. Each video participant will automatically be entered in to a drawing to be held on World Refugee Day, June 20th at 6pm for cash $! 1st drawing will receive $100, 2nd drawing will receive $100 and 3rd drawing will receive $300.

And… there’s a surprise twist to this! Find out World Refugee Day at 6pm on Asha’s Facebook Page live what that will be!! We are thankful to all who have helped to make this happen and trust God in the smallest of details. Clients: send your videos to us by 3pm 6/19/20 to be entered in the drawing with your response to this question: “With everything going on in our world today we know you have had your faith tested and faced many challenges with success. What is the one thing you want to tell all Americans and even all the world?” Yes, your voice matters! We want to hear from you.

  • Today’s Challenges of Teaching and Updating Clients

    April 7, 2020
    Uncategorized

Our Asha’s teachers are eager to continue their lessons with clients and are missing them during this time of separation. In order to help our clients to continue with their English practice and to encourage them with a familiar face, some of of teachers have put together video clips. Below are examples of some of the videos that are going out to clients directly via text message and/or are being shown by our Community Leadership group, a group of about 12 English speaking volunteers and/or clients that live within the refugee and asylee neighborhoods. (Don’t worry, the videos don’t seem to play upside down on my phone like they are shown upside down below. For whatever reason, WordPress won’t allow me to flip when posting for you). The community leaders have stepped up to help us get important information, government rules and recommendations out. We are so thankful for them.

A volunteer team also consistently collects information from various resources that is put into an informational document for our clients. The document is updated as the updates come to our attention and interpreted to clients as needed.

We are thankful for the team of people that have been regularly involved with us to help ensure our clients are informed, doing well and still connected. We’ve certainly been challenged to be even more creative with how we deliver our services during the current time of separation due to the health risks and concerns. Asha’s requests your prayers for wisdom, protection and provision as we continue our journey to love the nations well adjusting to the concerns of today. We pray for Gods glory to shine through us and for His gospel message to spread like wildfire fire for such a time as this.

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” -John 13:35

  • Masks for Nurses and Others

    April 2, 2020
    Uncategorized

About 2 weeks ago Asha’s Refuge initiated a project to help refugee clients participate in giving back during the current medical crisis our world is facing. We wanted to engage our clients to keep them busy and focused thinking on what they could creatively do to help others during this rather strange time of great need. We do not want them all bound up in fear but rather positively active while at home with their families.

Many of our clients have skills and talents that people do not always get to see. One family that has a lot of sewing talent quickly grabbed hold of our request for masks to be sewn for nurses in need. The idea for the masks started when we saw a post from a nurse friend who didn’t have a mask for her protection at work and expressed the shortage in the hospitals. One of our volunteers found the pattern and passed it to us. The production started with Nadine’s family’s help, and first with Nadine taking on the challenge to learn to make them. Her skilled mom helped her.

Nadine is now teaching others in the community to help her make them from their own homes. She is using her phone to make videos, text messages and phone calls to teach them what to do. (Of course these are refugee friends who also already have some sewing skills)! A generous donor gave us two more sewing machines to help increase the production of the masks. So far most of the fabric is uniquely African style with bright colors and interesting patterns. Asha’s is eager to find fabric that might appeal to children (such as baby animals) so that children who may have to wear a mask might feel a little more comfortable about it. It costs $40 per 6 yards of African fabric but any fabric would really do. Our refugee families and Asha’s staff are also praying over the masks before they go out. We are trusting God to protect our medical teams and our families.

    ***

Notice: Please understand the idea is to REDUCE the spread… the masks we are making are NOT N95 OR surgical masks recommended by the CDC as those are in great shortage and have to be manufactured specially. Many nurses are choosing to wear these over their paper masks if they can find the paper mask! This is not a preventative measure or anything to “cure” any virus or anything. It is only an effort to do our part in raising awareness and try to at least reduce the spread.

    ***

Volunteers and supporters are being very generous to help us with the tools and materials needed to make this project happen. While our production may be picking up in speed a little, we are asking for those wanting a mask, to please be patient with us. We realize people need them quickly, but are working as fast as we can with refugee families truly open hearted to try and help as they can. Message us at deborah@ashasrefuge.org if you are in need of a mask. Again, please understand we are a slow production team right now and are still working hard to make this all happen for many. There is no cost to nurses, doctor or medical teams and they are first to be served. All others, please simply donate to through our website at http://www.ashasrefuge.org after letting us know that you want one. This will help us with the cost of supplies and will also help us to help more families like Nadine’s family.

  • An Increased Need for Nonprofits Yet Decreased Giving

    March 29, 2020
    Uncategorized

Businesses, schools and nonprofits all over are prayerfully considering how to continue their services well within the confinement of the current quarantine and reduced income flow. Having ample people to serve and finance programs and services is certainly a challenge for many. We are living in a time when local nonprofits are needed the most. Yet, people are afraid to give back with understandable uncertainties shadowing them. This is a tough time where we may not be able to be physically together, but we can be emotionally supportive and together.

Asha’s is working hard to collect some produce, mostly nonperishable food items (beans, rice, pasta), seeds for planting, diapers and wipes, cleaning products and toiletries. These donations can be dropped off in Germantown, Memphis, Collierville and Olive Branch. Contact us at serve@ashasrefuge.org to get the details on a location nearest you.

Support for our clients is NOT just about physical food and passing out “stuff.” Asha’s is working with a small staff to provide online classes, family and immigration services, mentorship and advocacy as well as working to make deliveries of items. We very much need financial support to organize projects and continue as we are. Please, let’s not neglect giving during this time when our community needs us the most. Asha’s Refuge has always worked on a tight budget and our budget has just gotten much tighter causing us to evaluate just how much longer we can continue with little funds enabling us to do so. We have cut back about as much as we can. We are praying for our community of businesses, churches, nonprofits and families during this strange season. Please pray for us, talk to your connections, and consider giving as the Lord may so lead you. Here are our giving links:
