• Asha’s Refuge Refugee Community Gives Back by Sewing Masks for Nurses

    March 25, 2020
    Uncategorized

We’ve been paying attention to our nurse friends posts expressing their need for masks and the possibility that they and the medical teams that they work may have to resort to tying bandannas around their nose and mouth due to the shortage of masks. A volunteer found the pattern for the masks and Asha’s leadership quickly knew who to request help from to make them! Asha’s has a group of refugee woman that can sew very well and one mother in particular who has now taught her daughters to sew some alongside of her. We asked the family if they could help us with a project to make masks for the nurses and doctors in need. And of course, they’ve gotten busy right away!

Asha’s Refuge will be collecting the finished masks and taking them to our nurse connections who will then take them to work with them and share them with their coworkers. The masks are made of fabric that has been donated over the years by our community as well as some newer favorite African fabric scraps the family has collected. From what we understand, they can be washed in hot water and soap and reused. This would need to be confirmed with medical professionals. If one has no mask, maybe it’s better than nothing.

Just as I was writing to post this, the families sewing machine has quit and they may need a new one. The mother is working to repair her machine so she and her daughters can continue the sewing project.

Asha’s will be collecting material that can be used for sewing masks as the need for the masks continues. (We may also be looking for a new sewing machine for them, if this one breaks).

It is so wonderful to see how this family is working in partnership with us to give back to our community in need. God never masks His love which seems to always shine through His people during the most difficult of times.

  • Making an Impact During Strange Times

    March 24, 2020
    Uncategorized
The past couple of weeks have certainly kept us all on the edge of our seats waiting, watching and wondering what is going on, what we can or cannot do, and what ways we can work to help. We are living in “strange times”.  It has been interesting to watch the Big “C” Church’s response and how creative individual believers and families have been to connect to others during a time when they are making efforts to social distance. Asha’s Refuge has continued to make ourselves available to our clients as much as we can while also being mindful and respectful to others. We have delivered our information and updates to clients, volunteers and supporters with attitudes of “no fear” but being “actively still with the Lord” awaiting on Him to show us what directions and creative ways we can still be a part of helping the refugee and asylee community.
Here are some steps we have taken:
    1. Next Gen High School Education Classes are Ongoing but are Now All Online
    2. The First Baptist Church Asha’s Office and Classroom Space is Closed for services, but we are serving clients in other ways.
    3. A team of volunteers are consistently researching and writing updates, keeping up with the ever changing health situation, so that our clients and interpretors are informed and can make their own decisions based on the updates we provide.
    4. We are collecting items such as diapers, wipes, beans, rice, canned goods, pasta, cereals, household cleaning items, toiletries and paper products to be delivered by a very small team to our clients door step.
    5. Refugee and asylee community leaders have partnered with us to help get information and supplies to those clients in need.
    6. We are communicating to our clients via phone, text message, What’s App, Facebook and other forms of social media. A series of documents and flyers are being created regarding current job openings that are considered “essential” jobs, food pickup locations, healthy habits, etc.
    7. Our phones are being forwarded to Jamie right now and she is taking messages and holding all appointments for family and immigration services for a later date. Callers are being patient and understanding.
    8. We are working with a very small staff to handle the Next Gen online classes, office duties from home, updating the community, writing grants that may be available for us to help with any financial lag and getting goods out to clients.
    9. We are using this time to prepare and plan forward with our staff and update social media and our app.
    10. We are praying for our clients, volunteers, supporters, the US and other countries. Deborah is pulling together a prayer team specifically for this time. Contact her at deborah@ashasrefuge.org if you can commit to praying for what we already know of and also various needs that may come to our attention.
Thank you to all of the volunteers who are working to help us continue our services in unique ways. We believe the time we all have with our family and away from others may end up helping us all to draw nearer to our family and also appreciate others more. Our prayer is that we will each use this time to draw closer to God and become more passionate about sharing the love and hope message of Jesus to the nations. Asha’s Refuge classes and services at FBC are on hold until further notice as we, along with the rest of the world are on standby. Please be sure to watch your “news” and “notification” updates on our app, website blog page, check your email and watch for our Facebook updates.
“There will be strange things happening to the sun, the moon, and the stars. On earth whole countries will be in despair, afraid of the roar of the sea and the raging tides. People will faint from fear as they wait for what is coming over the whole earth, for the powers in space will be driven from their courses. Then the Son of Man will appear, coming in a cloud with great power and glory. When these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your salvation is near.” -Luke 21:25-28

  • Be Inspired By The Faith and Resilience Of Our Community Of Refugees and Asylees And Show Them Some Love

    March 19, 2020
    Uncategorized

Many of you are asking how we can best help our community of refugees and asylees right now.  Before we respond to that question, we want to share our thoughts on how this group of people can be helpful and serve as an example to the rest of us.  As we trust in our Sovereign God, and know that He makes good out of even our pain, is it possible that He has brought our refugee and asylee community to our city for such a time as this?  They have experienced a variety of hardships and have skills that help them adapt to changing conditions, so we can learn from them. They teach us to slow down, cherish the people around them, live simply, and to share what we have with others in their community in need. Even more, they have faith that has been tested in many ways that may be difficult for us to imagine, and yet they continue to trust God. So we want you to be encouraged that while we are challenged in many ways in these days, there are examples among us who have already walked through similar days by holding fast to their faith in our Good Good Father, and caring for each other. Their faith is strong and so is their community. Let’s use these days to stand strong in our faith and love people well

Now to answer the question of how we can best help members of our refugee and asylee community in the days ahead, here are a few ideas.

1 Offer food that brings special comfort from their home countries. Many of our clients enjoy a special porridge that is made of a variety of ingredients, including brown sugar, cassava flour, garbanzo bean flour, and white rice flour. If you can provide any of these ingredients, we would love to share them with our clients to bring them a taste of home. Other food items needed for daily meals include dried beans and rice.

2 Help a family start their spring garden by providing seeds. Gardening is a healthy and productive pastime for our clients, especially older clients who are skilled at growing food for their families in small plots of ground around their homes. The community has some urban garden areas which we could also help to provide seeds. Vegetables they particularly like to grow include cucumbers, corn, pinto beans, zucchini, yellow squash, tomatoes, green beans, cauliflower, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, cassava, any kind of greens (collard, mustard, turnip), and sweet potatoes.

3 Like your family, our clients also need cleaning and hygiene products such as toilet paper, liquid laundry detergent, bath and hand soap, liquid soap for handwashing dishes, paper towels, trash bags, and deodorant.

To make it easy for you to share some of these items with our clients, we have created a wish list on Amazon that includes the items mentioned above.  Please note that we have selected items that are currently available on Amazon, but we are happy for you to substitute other brands of similar products, and they do not have to be organic, gluten free or non-gmo.  https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1LY6SPIOQB03Y?ref_=wl_share

Items ordered on Amazon will ship directly to Jamie Jones for easy distribution.

If you prefer to buy items and drop them off rather than ordering online, we can arrange drop off at several homes in the area, including Jamie Jones in Olive Branch (Jamie@ashasrefuge.org), Jenny McFarland in West Germantown (Jenny.McFarland@ashasrefuge.org), Deborah Eaton in East Germantown (Deborah@ashasrefuge.org), and Erica Stubblefield in Collierville (Erica@ashasrefuge.org).

…So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

    1 Corinthians 13:13

  • Asha’s Refuge Class and Services Update

    March 18, 2020
    Uncategorized

AR Update Image 3.18.2020 In view of the current medical situation, the Asha’s Refuge leadership team has been praying while consulting available resources to make decisions that demonstrate our boldness of faith in Jesus as we also respectfully respond to our community of needs. Starting Tuesday, March 24, our office will be open to serve clients by appointment as usual.  The Next Generation High School Education Program will continue as scheduled.   We have determined, however, that it is best for us to close our American Life and Language classes, Kindergarten Readiness class, and Citizenship class for the remainder of this school year. Clients may call our office to make appointments for individual tutoring for Citizenship but are also encouraged to use resources online to study for any upcoming Naturalization test.  We feel it is our responsibility to help reduce the exposure of illness to our most vulnerable clients. We are looking at options for small group summer activities and classes, so please watch for more news to come. Asha’s Refuge will still need your help to tutor and mentor clients one on one which we feel also aligns with our desire to become even more relational and intentional with our services.  Please let us know if you would like to be on a list for individual client services.

Please be patient with us regarding our upcoming Taste of the Nations luncheon.  Unfortunately, we are postponing the April 23 luncheon to a date forward but yet to be determined.  We need your attendance, so please be watchful for the new date.  The extra time before the event will allow us to better plan for it, so please watch for details about ways to be involved.  The open house luncheon was also a fundraiser for Asha’s set during a spring season when our typical organizational funding seems to run low.  Financial uncertainties during this time can truly challenge our families which will greatly affect nonprofits, churches and small businesses. Asha’s Refuge will continue to assist a very vulnerable population of people in our city.  Please prayerfully and faithfully continue your regular giving while also considering if God has blessed you to give over and above your normal giving to help in any area that the nonprofit may have a lacking.  Asha’s will work with a much smaller staff and volunteer team to do very similar amounts of work in our community. You can give through this link: Pushpay or via Paypal.

As always, our desire is to respond to God’s call to love our neighbor as ourselves by living and sharing the hope that we have in our sovereign God through Jesus Christ and the work He did on the cross to redeem us.  How could we possibly back down from helping them now?  This is a time when our clients may need us the most.  It is NOT time to be fearful and take a break from the world, rather it is a time to “be still” in Christ while also individually running to the world with courage and boldness to tell them about the love, healing and hope message we have found in Jesus.  We have even more of a chance to be intentional with our family and neighbors.  We encourage very small group and two by two meetings with others during this time.  We also encourage you to use technology for good, share your faith, daily lift up others, share positive stories and give God the glory.  Let’s saturate the world around us for the sake of Jesus.

We are monitoring our phones, messages and Facebook page. Please reach out to us to share updates, prayer requests, comments, or other information you want us to be aware of.   Please contact us at serve@ashasrefuge.org if you’d like to help or have questions.  You may also contact us at 901-500-9200.

    Executive Director,

    Jamie Jones

“Be still and know that I am God.  I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”  -Psalm 46:10

“When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.” -Luke 21:28

“But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.  For I will give you the words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.”  -Luke 21:14-15

“Then he said to them, ‘Watch out!  Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.’”  – Luke 12:15

“And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it.  For the pagan world runs after such things, and your Father knows that yu need them.  But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.  Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.” -Luke 12:29-32

  • Taste of the Nations (Open House & Luncheon)

    February 18, 2020
    Uncategorized

Taste of the Nations BrochurePlease RSVP by texting us at 901-500-9200. Lunch tickets are $10 per plate. Please feel free to drop by anytime from 11am – 1pm, Thursday, April 23, 2020. (The earlier you come, however, the more possible choices of fun foods you may have.)

This event is an Open House Fundraiser and Luncheon to celebrate with our partners, neighbors, volunteers and clients on our new building space in the Binghampton Neighborhood. We are excited to be much closer to where many of our clients now live. Come familiarize yourself with our new location, enjoy some great recipes representing many of the countries of which our clients are from, fellowship with new friends, and perhaps do a little shopping from our tables of multicultural crafts and goods. Your participation helps to support our initiative to welcome well the stranger among us as we believe Jesus would do.

Volunteers are needed for this event to help set up, serve and clean up after the luncheon.

If you will not be able to participate in the luncheon, you can still participate in our fundraiser by giving at the link here. Our new building space is wonderful, but the reality is that our monthly budget has increased to support the new location and increased programs and services. Thank you for your prayers and continued support.

  • Purchase a Tshirt to Support Asha’s Refuge Next Generation

    February 1, 2020
    Uncategorized

Our Next Generation Students have experienced the difficulty of living in the refugee camps around the world and are given the awesome opportunity to see God’s glory through their chance for success in America. Most of these students are at a point in their life where they are praising God for delivering them. These students once were hungry and thirsty so they recognize the need in the community and the sovereignty of God in deliverance. Help these students give back to their community by purchasing one of these navy blue t-shirts for $20. Much like the people in Psalm they are seeing God’s everlasting love in their community and are ready to give back! Click here:https://pushpay.com/g/ashasrefuge?campusId= and select Next Generation for your donation. If you’d like your shirt to be mailed, please add $5 for mailing. Please message Madison@ashasrefuge.org to specify the size you want, and include mailing address if applicable. Shirts are available in adult small-XL, and youth large and XL.

Go, inspect the city of Jerusalem.

Walk around and count the many towers.

Take note of the fortified walls,

    and tour all the citadels,

    that you may describe them

    to future generations.

For that is what God is like.

He is our God forever and ever,

and he will guide us until we die.

  • Asha’s Refuge Classes and Services Resume, 02.04.2020 at 10:00am

    January 5, 2020
    Uncategorized

Classes:  Asha’s Refuge Tuesday and Thursday Conversational English Classes as well as all our regular services will resume Tuesday, February 4th, 2020 at 10:00am.  Our Next Generation High School Education Program will begin on this day as well meeting Tuesday, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (application and registration for the 2020/2021 year is now closed; class is full).  US Naturalization Classes should begin again on Thursday, February 5th, 2020, registration is currently open.  Enrollment is required for all classes, please contact us at 901-500-9200 to enroll.

Office Hours, Next Gen, Family and Immigration Services:  These services will also resume February 4th at our new location.  Ongoing family services through our office helpers were never paused because of the move.  Families can always contact us at 901-500-9200 for help and services as needed.  Our staff and advocates have been available to help where we can throughout the holidays and class time paused during the move.  Our office hours are 9am to 2pm Tuesday – Friday and some Saturdays if appointments are needed.  Clients can contact the office at 901-500-9200 Monday – Sunday, 24hrs for emergency situations only, leave a message and we will work to help as we are able.  Our phones are checked regularly for messages.  All clients are always encouraged to call us to make an appointment so that we can be sure to be available.

Asha’s Refuge has moved over the holiday and New Year weeks.  We are now more conveniently located for most of our clients.  The address to First Baptist Church where we will share building space is below.  Please be sure to call or text us if you are in the parking lot the first few weeks of coming until our Poplar side entrance is ready for use.  Please DO NOT buzz the church office, but call or text us instead so we can let you in.  Once our Poplar side entrance is ready for use, we will let you know and at that time you should be able to buzz the Poplar door and we can let you in.  We highly encourage you to please make an appointment as our schedule varies for various employees and if you’d like to see someone in particular, it is important for you to make an appointment.

Transportation: If you are within walking distance to the new location (200 East Parkway North, 3rd floor of First Baptist Church, Memphis, TN  38112) we highly encourage you to walk to the building.  Otherwise, we ask that you work out your own transportation to and from our building if you have an appointment.  If you need transportation help outside of our regular Tuesday and Thursday classes, you must check with us to see if we have drivers to help.  Tuesday and Thursday morning classes we will provide van transportation to and from class for SOME apartment complexes when students group together to wait at apartment mailboxes or near the office and are on time at 9:30am.
